The Mission
The mission for the development trust is;
“To implement and deliver the cultural and social objects of the Trusts”
Structure
The Trust was formed in 1993 as charitable organisation and is in the process of having this status reconfirmed.
The current board consists of Grant Knuckey, Mark Te One, Liz Mellish, Jeanie Hughes and is chaired by Piki Carroll
Objectives
The objectives of the Trust are to provide guidance and development for Maori People including the support of educational, employment and resource development.
Operations
Nga Tekau O Poneke Health Services
Nga Tekau o Poneke specializes in kaupapa maori alcohol and drug services in the rohe of mana whenua ki Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui since it began in 1996.
Two counsellors are employed who provide counselling from a maori perspective incorporating a holistic approach based on Durie’s (1984) Tapa Wha Model. It is also registered as a LTSA assessment centre.
The service is under contract to the Capital Coast DHB.
Hikoikoi Sports & Culture Club
The objective of the club is to support social,recreational and cultural opportunities for whanau to participate in and help strengthen whanaungatanga.
This activity is based at the site at Hikoikoi which is well suited to promote the club.
Touch Rugby is played between October and February and whanau of all ages participate
Waka ama operates from the Hikoikoi site and with waka available this is a growing attraction for whanau
The latest project is to produce a waiata CD
Financial
The activities of the Trust have been self supporting as sponsorship is sought when projects are undertaken and the Parent Trusts do subsidise certain activities .
Future
The Development Trust is in the process of reviewing it’s activities with the objective of revitalising the trusts profile and the catalyst has been the relocation of executive office to Hikoikoi.
The potential of the Trust and the need to involve whanau in the affairs of the trust has been recognised by the Trustees of the Parent Trusts and they have agreed to construct another building at Hikoikoi which principally will be available for activities of the development trust.
